Event in Leiden to Celebrate Islamic Intellectual Traditions

On 9 April 2026, TIAIS Executive Director Professor Mohammed Rustom visited Brill’s head office in Leiden to celebrate the launch of Islamic Intellectual Traditions, TIAIS’s new Diamond Open Access journal published in partnership with Brill.

The event opened with welcoming remarks by Dr. Maurits van den Boogert, Co-Chief Publishing Officer of De Gruyter Brill, who underscored the significance of the journal’s multilingual and cross-disciplinary scope. Professor Rustom, who serves as the journal’s Editor-in-Chief, followed by highlighting the promise of this major Open Access undertaking not only for the advancement of Islamic studies, but also for fostering cross-cultural understanding across the humanities and among the wider public.

With an international advisory board distinguished by its 1:1 gender parity and comprised of scholars at the forefront of Islamic studies, Islamic Intellectual Traditions has already achieved remarkable success. Since its launch last month, the articles in its inaugural issue have been viewed and downloaded nearly 8,000 times by readers worldwide.
